Documentary On Fulani Banditry: The Nigerian Government Threaten Sanctions On BBC And Its Counterpart

Documentary On Fulani Banditry: The Nigerian Government Threaten Sanctions On BBC And Its Counterpart

The Federal Government of Nigeria has made it clear, that it will 'sanction' the country's section of British Broadcasting Company and its counterpart, the Trust TV, a television broadcasting company owned by 'Media Trust Group'. This threat is coming because of some stories recently aired by the media houses concerning Fulani banditry in the northern region of the country. The mentioned media houses in their separate documentaries, freshly exposed the activities of terrorists that are making life difficult for Nigerians.

Speaking with newsmen on Thursday, 27th July, 2023,

The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed in a reaction, said the documentaries promoted terrorism in Nigeria.

From his view, Mohammed said the appropriate regulatory body was already looking at the infractions and appropriate sanctions that would be meted out to both platforms. In his very own words, he said: “There is a regulatory body regulating broadcasting; which is the Nigeria Broadcasting Commission(NBC) and they are also aware of this incident. They are looking at which part of the Broadcasting Code that has been violated by the BBC and Trust TV."

Lai also noted that, "Media is the oxygen that terrorists and bandits use to breathe."

As the information minister further expressed his grievances, he said: "When otherwise, reputable platforms like BBC can give their platform to terrorists showing their faces as if they are Nollywood stars, it is unfortunate. I want to assure them that they will not get away with it, appropriate sanctions will be meted to both the BBC and the Trust Tv, he concluded."
