As the Nigerian Senate proposes death sentence for Hate speech, Fulani Herdsmen Storm Benue, kill and injure many
BY PETER DURU,
MAKURDI-- No fewer than 10 persons were feared dead, Monday evening, in a bloody attack on Omosu village in Ojigo ward Edumoga of Okpokwu local government area of Benue state by suspected herdsmen.
Vanguard gathered from a source in the area that the well armed herdsmen stormed the village at about 4pm shooting sporadically at anything on sight and burning down houses in the community.
“It has bloody a bloody evening in Okpokwu, armed herdsmen stormed Omosu village and opened sporadic fire on the locals killing anyone and thing they came across. “I cannot give you the casualty figure or number of people killed and injured at the moment, but many have been killed and several houses were also razed.” Confirming the development on phone, Chairman of the local government council, Mr. Francis Ejembi said there was pandemonium in the entire area.
He said, “It’s a serious problem and heartrending. We are moving corpses and the injured from the village to the hospital and so far we have moved about 10 corpses and several injured persons to Saint Mary’s Hospital Okpoga. “We are still searching for more corpses and the injured and it is very possible that we may recover more dead bodies and injured persons because the village has been sacked and many are still missing.
It’s indeed a sorry sight here. We have also informed the Police. When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, Assistant Superintendent, ASP, Moses Yamu confirmed the report. Yamu said, “We have reports of clash between the youths of Omosu village in Edumoga community. Our men are there responding to the development. “Meanwhile we do not have the figure of casualties but our men are on ground to check an escalation of the crisis. We will get back to you when we get a clearer picture of the casualty figure because we do not want to speculate.”
This is coming few hours after suspected herdsmen allegedly killed five persons at the weekend in a fresh attack on Umenge village in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State by suspected herdsmen despite the ongoing Exercise Ayem Akpatuma (cat race) a Nigerian military spike operation to stem the incursions of the herders in the state.
