Nnamdi Kanu and his emissaries of ‘new Igbo essence By Abu Najakku
In September last year or so, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, advised President Muhammadu Buhari to release Nnamdi Kanu, the imprisoned leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). According to him, unless Buhari freed Kanu, he ran the risk of losing Igbo votes in 2019! Predictably, Buhari ignored Soludo’s advice. Did Buhari require Igbo votes to win the Presidency in 2015?
Last week, Professor Soludo along with Pat Utomi, Ferdinand Agu, Chidi Odinkalu, Udenta Udenta, Tony Nnadi, Collins Ugwu, Andy Wabali, Innocent Chukwuma, Sam Amadi and others loudly called for the release of Kanu. Operating under the auspices of a new group called Nzuko Umunna, Soludo and company claimed they “were sent to pay a visit to Kanu and his associates currently in detention at the Kuje prison as part of a worldwide consultation on the peace and development of Alaigbo/Nigeria.”
At the end of the visit, Soludo who spoke on behalf of the group, called for “the urgent release of Kanu, his colleagues and all prisoners of conscience, as part of the process of the search for national cohesion and building a new Nigeria.” The group threatened to approach the International Criminal Court (ICC), if it becomes necessary”, to effect the release of Nnamdi Kanu.
Who are “the prisoners of conscience” Soludo referred to? Why are Soludo and his group joining the fray of Nnamdi Kanu’s trial? Why are some people always in the forefront when it comes to the demonstration of ethnic loyalty? Suddenly, Nnamdi Kanu has become a winning name and everyone in the South East is scrambling to cash in on that to burnish their credentials and improve their political standing?
Nor is it clear why Soludo continues to put such nincompoop as Nnamdi Kanu in the same bracket of political value and erudition as Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Olusegun Obasanjo and Joseph Tarka jailed by previous administrations. Please, Kanu is a clown, a poor starter and comes nowhere near any of these big names.
It’s all okay to speak of a “new Igbo essence” and it is alright to “uplift and uphold the dignity of every Igbo man and engage stoutly to make sure nobody abuses and takes the Igbo person for granted anywhere in the world” as Pat Utomi pointed out.
However, it is startling to hear Pat say they discussed economy with Nnamdi Kanu, which and whose economy? Pat Utomi also said of Nnamdi Kanu: “What I took away from our meetings is that he is a very intelligent person. He clearly is not mad. He’s very strategic and focused.”
Of course, Nnamdi Kanu is mad, only a mad person can confront Muhammadu Buhari with the demand for a state of Biafra. Only a mad man will call Muhammadu Buhari “a paedophile, a terrorist, an idiot and an embodiment of evil.”
Soludo’s new do-gooding is dead on arrival. It is useless to imagine that Nnamdi Kanu’s fate could be decided anywhere outside the Nigerian courts, unless something gives. It is worthy of note that Justice Binta Murtala Nyako, Buhari’s “sister” has struck out six of the charges slammed on Kanu. However, according to court records, the remaining five charges bordering on conspiracy, treasonable felony, publication of defamatory material and Kanu’s alleged importation of goods contrary to Section 47 (2) (a) of the Customs and Excise Management Act, Cap C45, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, will be sustained and our “prisoners of conscience” tried for the offences.
It is absolutely impossible to release Nnamdi Kanu unconditionally, except there is a Biafran conquest of Nigeria. Kanu’s kinsmen, whatever their pedigree, should stop meddling in his trial. They should try to learn from other sub-national groups that have sat back to allow the courts to settle their kinsmen’s matters. It is preposterous to call Kanu “strategic and focused” as Pat Utomi did. If Kanu were strategic, he would have restricted himself to the agitation for his so called Biafra instead of calling Muhammadu Buhari names he cannot defend. If Kanu were focused, he would have properly drawn up his map of Biafra, instead of the one that includes the Anang, the Ibibio, the Efik, the Igala, the Itsekiri, the Urhobo, etc. These groups have said repeatedly that they don’t have the slightest interest in being inmates of the new “zoo” that Kanu is proposing to establish. Nnamdi Kanu is neither intelligent nor strategic or focused. It is such a great pity, a mockery and a painful irony that Kanu has become the animal in the zoo that people are scrambling to go and see at Kuje prison.
Soludo, and his Nzuko Umunna must allow the judicial process to run its full course instead of trying to inserting themselves into this saga. The “new Igbo essence” or the “Igbo renaissance consciousness movement” that Pat spoke about will inevitably clash with other essences and renaissance consciousness movements which seek unfettered court trial of Nnamdi Kanu to answer for his transgressions. This government needs not to be browbeaten with the threats of reporting Kanu’s matter to ICC or wherever. Nnamdi Kanu must account for his name calling among other things and if he cannot justify it, he should remain in jail till the return of Jesus!
Nnamdi Kanu is NOT in the class of Obafemi Awolowo, Olusegun Obasanjo or Joseph Tarka; none of them canvassed the disintegration of Nigeria. Kanu should face his treason and defamation trial and if he’s convicted, Soludo and his Umunna can beg the government to exercise the option of pardon for him; after all our “prisoner of conscience” has said he has enough information at his disposal to cause conflagration, so why hoard it!

May be this writer --Abu Najakku should read this: http://www.thebiafraherald.co/2017/03/ipob-peril-of-forsaking-ones-father-land.html written by a Niger Delta from Ogoni. I'm also from Rivers State Niger Delta. Does Abu not see the millions of youths from Niger Delta that are so impoverished? Daily they cry-out and demand for Biafra. Please, Abu start now to park your bag to relocate to the North or SW, because the Republic of Biafra is certain - whether you want it or not. You are only a voice among millions of your people who want to exit from the failed and murderous Hausa-Fulani terrorist State. What a coward piece and a slave mentality.
