Jubilation In The Ancient City as Northerners Take Over NNPC
Published By Family Writers
The ancient city of Kano was thrown into jubilation on Monday night, following the new composition of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, that saw the removal of a southerner, Ibe Kachikwu, as its General Managing Director, GMD, and the immediate appointment of Maikanti Kacalla Baru, a core northerner from Bauchi State, to head the corporation.
A highly placed Source in Kano, who spoke to Post-Nigeria via telephone on Monday night, said that the city of Kano was agog with joy upon hearing the announcement.
“As I speak to you now, the city of Kano is agog with joy and jubilation. Can’t you hear the shout of Sai Baba in the background? Indeed, they are happy.
“The restructuring of NNPC and the appointment, favours the north; therefore, it is a welcome development”, the source said.
Buhari, had approved the composition of the Board of the NNPC. A statement by the presidential spokesman, Femi Adesina, said the reconstitution was done based on the provision of Section 1 (2) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation Act of 1997, as amended.
The new board is composed of the following: Group Managing Director – Dr Maikanti Kacalla Baru (NORTH), Mallam Abba Kyari, (NORTH), Dr Tajuddeen Umar, (NORTH), Mallam Mohammed Lawal, (NORTH), Mallam Yusuf Lawal, (NORTH), Dr Thomas M.A John, (SOUTH) and Dr. Pius O. Akinyelure (SOUTH).
A cursory look at the list, shows that majority of the NNPC executives, hail from the north.
The list also shows that there was little or no regard with the Nation’s federal character policy.
Our source, a Chief Executive of an oil servicing firm, noted that sensitive appointments in an organisation like the NNPC, should not only meet the federal character principle of the government, but must be seen to have satisfied the requirement.
He noted, that the present administration should refrain from any action that was capable of igniting crisis in the Niger Delta.
