Shoot Civilians, Go To Jail IGP Warns Cops

The Inspector General of Police, Solomon Arase yesterday warned officers and men of the Nigeria Police Force to desist from the habit of shooting civilians or risk being jailed within 48 hours of the commission of the offence.

He also disclosed that from January 1, 2016, it will become an offence for SPY officials recruited by banks as part of their security team to wear police uniforms ordering that such men should be arrested and detained.

Arase who spoke at Eleweran headquarters of the Ogun State Police Command in Abeokuta however appealed to the rank and file of the force to show civility in their operation by obeying constituted authorities.

He however warned his men not to dabble into commercial and civil matters.

Arase also warned policemen against detaining of suspects more than time allowed by the law saying police authorities have paid money running into millions of naira in damages that arose from illegal detention.

He however singled out dangerous crimes like murder and armed robbery that can warrant longer detention of suspects because they will involve courts to process.

The police chief also enjoined his men to improve their image saying wearing of slippers for instance does not portray the force in good light.

Earlier, the state commissioner of police Abdulmajid Ali listed the challenges facing the command to include poor infrastructure and the need for additional divisions.
